A man from Arenas del Rey was arrested for deliberately drowning his dog in the Pantano de Bermejales, near Alhama de Granada.
The 45-year-old man is accused of tying a block of cement to the dog and then throwing it into the water. The body of the unfortunate animal was found by a woman who had been paddling in shallow water on the 5th of this month.
The environmental department of the Guardia Civil, Seprona, based in Alhama de Granada, went to the reservoir to investigate. They fished out the cadaver, which effectively had a block of cement tied to its back legs. The dog was alive when he allegedly threw it into the water.
Seprona soon found out who the owner was because of the chip that the dog had inserted under its skin. When they questioned him he contradicted himself on several occasions, whilst trying to explain why he had not reported the dog as missing if it had, as he claimed, run off. Futhermore, the owner who has had more than one run in with the police on previous occasions, has a violent character.
The Guardia Civil have launched a Twitter campaign: #YoSiPuedoContarlo where citizens can report cases of animal cruelty or abandonment etc.
