The Central Government announced yesterday evening that Motril is now included amongst the other Safe Ports, thus avoiding a looming catastrophy.

Why this welcome change? Because the Junta Health Board finally sent off the request yesterday for it to be included, after all the hullabaloo and cries of indignation from all political parties across the spectrum and the business sector. Their provincial office failed to pass it on to the Central Government.

Spain has eleven Safe Ports: Vigo, Barcelona, Bilbao, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife, Valencia, Alicante Santander and, finally, Motril, all of which are permitted to handle ferry traffic with foreign passengers.

Motril has four international lines connecting Motril to Melilla, Tánger, Nador and Alhucemas, all of which are in Morocco, except Mellila, which is a Spanish enclave port.

Editorial comment: what a pity one can’t sack politicians but have to wait, instead, for them to resign, which normally translates into “waiting in vain.”
