Work has begun on covering over the irrigation channel that runs behind Almuñécar’s San Sebastian through the vega, alongside a track.

At the top of the San Sebastian road, on the right, there is the old communal wash area from before the days of washing machines. This is where the track begins, finishing in the river. Along part of this track, Camino Bajo del Barrio San Sebastián, runs the irrigation channel.

Anyway, the idea is both to improve the efficiency of the irrigation travel and improve the safety of the track users.

About 100 metres of the channel runs at the same level as the track, making it narrower, explained the Head of the Maintenance Department, Beatriz González. Twenty-eight workers are involved in the task which also involves replacing some of the channel with a buried 600mm pipe.

The budget is 67,655 euros which was financed by the Town Hall with the assistance of the Central Government (34,685 euros) and the Junta (15,597 euros).
