Marine Flares on Costa Beaches

SAL Marine Flar on BeachThe Guardia Civil Bomb Disposal Team, TEDAX, defused a marine flare that was found on Playa Granada on Wednesday.

This was followed by another discovery on Friday afternoon when one was found on one of Salobreña’s beaches.

In both cases the affected area of the beach was cordoned off around a 200 metre perimeter, pending the arrival of the TEDAX team.

Furthermore, 10 walkers were escorted off the beach and nearby residents were asked to stay in their homes.

Although these marine marker flares are not ‘explosives,’ they do contain white phosphorus which can produce fatal burns. Both devices (Motril and Salobreña) were detonated on the beaches after being buried.
