The project for the Maro golf course has a budget of 311m euros and would take ten years to complete, according to Sociedad Azucarera Larios S. A. (Salsa)
This figure includes an 18-hole golf course, several hotels and 680 dwellings on the Maro vega, next to the town of Nerja. (Maro lies within the municipality of Nerja)
There is a 7-minute, promotional video on the net that was produced in 2017 which aspired to, “making Nerja an attractive destination for upmarket tourist segment that is not seasonal.”
If the project does come about then it will be Axarquía’s third golf course, joining Añoreta, (Rincón de la Victoria) and Baviera Golf (Caleta de Vélez).
Golf courses are thirsty so the idea is to use recycled water from the new sewage-treatment plant… when it eventually comes onto line.
As mentioned in a previous article, Nerja’s PGOU will have to be modified as the housing will be going onto non-buildable land next to the N-340. Below that will be the golf course, which has been designed by Cabell Robinson, the designer of the Valderrama Golf Course, amongst others.
Furthermore, the old San Joaquín sugar factory, which dates back to 1884, will become a 5-star hotel.
The 200-hectare plot lies between the Barranco de Burriana and Maro itself, just outside the Natural Park border for Los Acantilados. The developers consider that it is precisely its location next to the Maro cliffs that will put it amongst the most attractive golf courses in Spain.

If this project were to go ahead it would be a catastrophe for the area. This area is one of outstanding natural beauty which should be preserved not exploited by money hungry investors.

Yes, I absolutly agree, it would be horrific to see the beautiful authentic area be destroyed for a golfpark! It will be the end of the charm of Nerja and Maro, another place manmade and just for the rich..I am for renewing all the area in eco farming, no plastic and waist everywhere and no harmfull pesticides! Do you know they still spray with roundup here? And what about all the asbestos everywhere? Not just many roofs made of this dangerous material thay is causing incurable lungcancer, but it is just laying around everywhere in Andalusia and I see it on parhs here in Nerja and Maro wherever I walk. A BIG cleanup is needed to this area and including the NEW plant for cleaning waste water that seems to be a joke as it is still not active and tons of waste , yes, toilet waste floods into our Sea!! Oh oh oh what is this thing that in 2020 things like this can still happen? And now a golfpark? It is time for a bigger action to see that no harm is done to the nature, the bees and other animals, to the locals who need to leave their plots they build their lifes around… wake up! No golf but yes Care and respect for the nature!
Yogi: had you read our other articles (1, 2 3 & 4) on this subject, you would have known that we have presented the arguments put forward by those that oppose the project, as well as information as to who they are. Pity you didn’t look further before firing off this ‘rebuke.’
As journalism this makes great PR! You wouldn’t know from reading it that there is popular opposition to the Larios plan for Maro. At the following link you can read about alternative sustainable plans for the area and sign a petition against the monstrous overdevelopment that the company wishes to impose on it.

Aren’t there enough half finished developments along this part of this beautiful Andalusian coastline without starting another. This will totally destroy the tranquillity on charming Mark Village and surrounding areas.
