The Prime Minister appeared before the press to announce a nationwide ‘State of Alarm,’ whose measure will come into effect tomorrow, Saturday.
It is expected that it will involve the closure of bars and restaurants, which has already come into affect in some autonomous regions of the country, such as Cataluña and the Basque Lands.
Food shops will remain operative, as will gasolineras, pharmacies and other providers of essential needs of this kind.
This situation will last for a fortnight but will be extendible according to future circumstances.
The overall advice is to stay at home as much as possible.
We will provide more details information tomorrow when how this new emergency measure will affect different sectors becomes known.
Editorial note: The Spanish Government has the capacity, according to Article 116.2 of the Spanish Constitution to impose a State of Alarm, in a time of a health crisis, allowing the Government to marshal all national resources, public, private and military for a period of 15 days. It takes the form of a Royal Decree but has to be ratified by a two-thirds majority in the House of Parliament.
In other words, the state can commandeer private hospitals and even hotels to provide emergency hospital space. It also allows the Government to use military medical assets, as well.
