New Motril Unemployment Office

MOT Proposed Site for Labour ExchangeThe labour exchange (unemployment office) in Motril is a bit cramped, not only because of the queues but also because the premises are too small in general.

Consequently, the Town Hall and the Junta have got together and reached a deal where the municipality will provide the plot and the Junta will pay for the construction of the building.

So far, the Town Hall has selected two possible sites; one next to the projected police station for the municipal police and the other one, a smaller plot, next to the sports pavilion (see photo).

The Provincial Delegate for Employment, Virginia Fernández, has already signed the official documents requesting a suitable plot, so the ball is rolling. This bureaucratic hurdle should be easily navigated as both entities are ‘keen puppies’ on the idea. The Junta’s architectural surveyors will then have a look at both plots and decide which they want.

The present labour exchange has 400 sq/m of usable floor space but the new one will need at least 700 sq/m.

The office sees some 400 job-seekers pass through its doors every day, although at certain times of the month the figure is much higher.

The office is not only for Motrileños but also people from Guájares, Ítrabo, Molvízar, Salobreña, Gualchos, Lújar and Vélez de Benaudalla – in the case of Salobreña, Motril and Gualchos, we’re also talking about their municipal dependencies such as Castell, Lobres and Calahonda, for example. In other words, they cater for some 11,800 registered unemployed.
