Selling illegal drugs like marihuana can bring in a tidy sum, but it can also be very expensive if you are caught, which was the case for a man from Padul.
Not one to go into something half-heartedly, he decided to grow 800 marihuana plants amongst his father’s maize crop… and he got caught. This was two years ago and now the case has reached the provincial appeals court where the following sentence was confirmed.
This green-fingered son has been sentenced to pay a two-million-euro fine, as well as spending a spell in the land striped sunshine lasting three years and four months.
Another man was also involved got off slightly lighter, as he received a jail sentence of two years incarceration (which means that it is automatically a suspended sentence) and a piffling fine of a mere 864,000 euros. This ‘leniency’ was because the magistrates took into account that he was an alcoholic and a weed junkie who suffers ” a state of confusion” given his addictions.
