The Prime Minister of the Junta de Andalucía, Susana Díaz, has called for a rail connection for Motril Port.
She made this comment whilst visiting the port installations, saying that she would call upon the Central Government to include the necessary funds for such infrastructure within the 2019 national budget.
“Motril Port ranks amongst ports with top exports growth in the country so it deserves good [transport] connections. It has grown a lot in a short time because its maritime links are economically viable,” she said.
Editorial comment: good political sound bytes but that is about as far as it goes. The Central Government will be lucky to be able to pass the 2019 budget as it is a minority government. As it is they are trying to obtain an extra 6,000m euros for social welfare so it is doubly unlikely to materialise.
Furthermore, the days when Spain was inundated with EU funds for communications infrastructure are long over. There simply is no money available for this; not this year, nor any time in the near future.
