provincial lawcourts of granadaThe Granada law courts held a trial yesterday involving two men charged with alleged attempted murder and violent robbery.

The incident took place in January 2017 in La Herradura where a man was mugged with a machete.

The two accused men aged 30 and 33 – one of whom is from Morocco – are in preventative custody. The Moroccan faces expulsion from the country if found guilty, upon reaching parole part of his prison sentence. Both men have criminal records.

According to the Public Prosecutor, it was around 18.00h on the 28th of January 2017 that both men were in the area of La Herradura known as Las Maravillas when they came across their victim.

Both men wore balaclavas, gloves and one of them was armed with a machete of large dimensions – they were not popping out for cigarettes, obviously.

They demanded that the victim handed over all that he had on him of worth. At that point a struggle broke out during which the victim was beaten with the handle of the machete until he collapsed on the floor.

The two assailants, fearing that they had been recognised, decided to kill him. They had already severed one of the victim’s thumbs when one of them placed the blade of the weapon on the victim’s neck and said, “I’m going to have to kill you, don’t resist!”

In the meantime, the accomplice had removed the victim’s watch and mobile phone valued at 110 euros.

The original source does not mention how this encounter ended, but the victim obviously survived and spent 266 days unable to carry out “habitual tasks.”

The P.P. recommends 9-years’ imprisonment for both of them for attempted murder and a further five years for the violent mugging.

12/09 (Wed) Update: Still no news on how it went, which is hardly surprising as the judges will have to deliberate first.
