An 88-year-old shepherd will appear in court on the 9th of May, accused of attempted murder after braining another man with a shovel.
That was five years ago in the Baza area when the shepherd was a sprightly – and aggressive – 83-year old. There was another person involved, but he has since died.
The Public Prosecutor, optimistically, is recommending an 8-year prison sentence followed by a 10-year court order to keep his distance from the victim.
It was the morning of the 9th of July, 2012 in a covered goat pen within an area of land known as Cortijo Narváez, within the Sierra de Baza. The accused and the now deceased companion were collecting up dung. It was then that the victim drove up in his car and walked in.
For reasons unknown (to the Public Prosecutor) an argument ensued between the two elderly men and the 30-year-old victim from Cádiz. The younger man then snatched up a shovel and set about the two shepherds, it appears.
The two elderly men were not pleased and reacted violently, claims the P.C., beating the victim on the head and face with a hard object (shovel).
As a result the victim suffered multiple skull fractures required attention in the ICU in order to save his life. He remained hospitalised for 50 days and off work for a total of 485 days.
