The Junta is immersed in a programme of cleaning up the ramblas and riverbeds within the municipalities of Jete, Salobreña and Almuñécar.
The Andalusia Government has earmarked 294,000 euros for the task, which is being carried out to minimise the risk of flooding.
Junta bigwigs were out visiting the Rambla de Molvízar above Salobreña, nodding and pointing importantly before the gathered, camera-armed, members of the press. The said rambla (storm bed) is 20 metres wide at that point and stretches a total of three kilometres.
The cleaning crews have finished work in the Rambla de la Caleta, Rambla los Dominguitos and the Barranco del Arca, which are also within the municipality of Salobreña.
Work is also being carried out in the Valle Río Verde within the municipality of Jete, where they have been removing accumulated silt around the mouth of the Barranco de Bolobona. As well as the excess silt, the workmen are also removing vegetation growing in the riverbed.
This work affects 550 meres of Río Verde and 280 metres of the Barranco Bolobona.
Lastly, there is also work on the Río Seco, removing wild cane and other vegetation, along 850 metres of its length – 380 metres have already been cleared.
Junta-representative for the Environment, Sra. Oria, pointed out that previous work of this kind had already been carried out on the Rambla del Tejar and el Río Jate, in La Herradura.
Of the 55 individual operations that have been programmed in 14 municipalities and two dependencies, 48 have already been completed, three are on the point of concluding and one is 25% done.
