Municipal Market Improvements

The Motril Mercado Municipal is getting a bit of a facelift, starting with the four entrances being sorted out.

The Councillor for Urban Development and Public Works, Antonio Escámez, had a good nose around, together with the Councillor for Public Health, Miguel Ángel Muñoz, inspecting the work, costing just under 21,000 euros.

“The Town Hall has made a great effort to obtain the doors and get them fitted in time,” said Councillor Muñoz, explaining that the stallholders had long complained that the old ones were considerably deteriorated.

He also explained that the doors had been changed two at a time, so that the building was always accessible and a normal day’s routine wouldn’t be interrupted by the building work.

Another reason that the doors were being replaced now was because if it weren’t done before the 31st of December then the Town Hall would lose the grant money received – hence the previous mention of ‘getting it done in time.’

The two councillors also announced that they had plans for the market it make it a more attractive shopping area for residents and visitors alike. For this reason they had put in for another grant from the Junta de Andalucia for 1.2m euros for the improvement of accessibility and ‘energy efficiency.’ The flooring will be replaced and the roof fixed up to remedy the leaks.

There is also a project lined up for a Mercado Gourmet on the upper floor – the Town Hall is in touch with local businesses to see if anybody is interested.

These projected market improvements go hand-in-hand with another grant for 600,000 euros to do up the adjacent square, Plaza de la Tenería.
