It will come as no surprise to many weary air travellers ,but Spanish flights suffer three times more delays or cancellations than the European average.
But it goes up and down because the 2016 fgiure was 66% on the previous year, whereas this year it is 15%, by without counting the recent Ryainair ‘turbulence.’
As for Europe in general, ad average of 40,000 flights are affected each year by hiccups that are sufficiently bad to warrant compensation from the airline. We’re talking about delays over three hours in length, cancellations or cases of overbooking. Approximately a 10th of that European figure concern flights taking off or landing in Spain.
The top three countries in the world for delays/cancellations are the USA, France and Spain. It is no surprise that these three countries that are the main tourist destinations in the world, together with the UK, Italy and Denmark.
According to the AirHelp webpage, 6.5 passengers were affected by normal delays; i.e., excluding strikes adverse weather, neither of which warrant compensation, during 2016,and if people had claimed compensation, airlines would have coughed up 2.3 billion euros – the trouble is that only about two percent of affected travellers do. Put another way, airlines in Spain alone got to keep 900-million euros of unclaimed damage sums.
