La Caleta Fiestas

SAL Caleta FiestasThe Salobreña dependency, La Caleta, is holding its annual fiestas from the 13th to the 16th of this month. But before that, on the 8th, the Feria del Día opens.

On the 9th there will be an across-the-bay swimming competition, so there’s plenty of pre-fiesta activity!

This is the first year that La Caleta will hold a Feria del Dia, and as mentioned above, will start on the weekend before the fiestas proper. It will be inaugurated at midday in the square where the hamlet’s Casa de la Cultura is.

Bar Manolo (La Guardia) will be putting on some fiesta-style migas and a knees-up band, Los 500, will knock out some decibels, hopefully, in tune.

The next day, on Sunday, will be a swimming competition, which is to La Caleta from the Peñon with the first splash at 10.00h

Which brings us to the 13th with a kick-off event called Diez a las Diez, which consists of letting of ten rocket at 10.00h – at least it’s a civilised time! This will take place each of the four mornings of the fiesta. There will also be a firework display on the first night.

That’s all the bangs and bursts that you’re going to get in the mornings, primarily because the Asociación Estrella Mar requested it (it frightens special-needs children) and also because of pets and other animals that suffer no end with the countless detonations. Chapeau, La Caleta!

On Day One there will also be slap-up meal for the elderly at the Pensioners’ Club and a remigio (a card game) tournament. Then at 19.00h there is a Giants Heads Parade, finishing up with the knees-up band.

Friday the 14th will see a dominoes championship and a motorised paraglider demonstration on the Guardia beach. At 17.00h there will be fun in the Plaza del Lavadero with a Water & Foam Party. Then at 21.30h the Salobreña Brass Band will play in front of the Casa de la Cultura. This is followed at 23.00h with a change of band and competition to choose the Queen and Mister of the Fiestas..

On Saturday the 15th there will be a Feria del Dia from midday in front of the Casa de la Cultura, where there will be a swimming-costume party, as well as a Spanish omelette-making competition and a tournament of rentoy (another card game). In the afternoon will be a religious ceremony and then at 22.30h a knees up with the Orquesta Barbarella.

And then, finally, on Sunday the 15th at 13.00h there will be a beer festival (now you’re talking!) in the Plaza del Lavadero, while in the afternoon/evening there sea/land procession will begin; in other words the Virgen will get a boat trip as well carted around on people’s shoulders until she gets bored stiff. Plenty of gaily decorated small boats – these will be judged and a winner chosen.

The whole fiestas will be wound up with a firework display in the evening.
