AND Semana Santa StampedeIt is testimony to how jumpy the Spanish general public is over terrorist attacks that panic broke out during a Semana Santa procession in Sevilla resulting in several injuries.

One of the victims is in Intensive Care with head injuries and whose condition is described as serious. All told, 17 people were treated in the city’s main hospital.

On the other hand, eight people were arrested for having caused the stampede and general consternation during the early hours when the procession took place.

The most serious incident took place on Calle Marques de Paradas, just as the La Hermandad de la Esperanza de Triana was parading along it. A group of individuals started shouting and stamping on the ground, and even threatening some of the bystanders.

Suddenly, people began to run; not just the bystanders but also members of the procession and members of the brass band.

The police tried to calm the crowd which finally brought normality back to the event within minutes. After a short while, the procession was reformed and moved forward again, accompanied by applause from the crowds. However, several of the band members were missing, which later turned out to be because their instruments had been damaged in the crush.
