Guardsman Rafel Peso, who had been operating a police check point, was hit by a BMW 750 occupied by two Moroccan citizens.
The car actually swerved onto the hard shoulder to hit the policeman before speeding off. The victim, who was from Palma Mallorca, was knocked 20 metres by the impact and died four hours later in hospital from head injuries.
The car had failed to stop at a previous checkpoint, so Guardsman Peso together with a partner were put in place to stop the car above Cotobro.
The arrested man, who figured among the 10-most-wanted fugitives in Spain, had been hiding in Morocco since then. The other occupant entered Spain from that country regularly and was arrested back in 2015.
The police were able to establish the ID’s of the occupants because the car was found in the La Herradura area shortly after the incident, allowing the forensic police to take fingerprints and DNA samples.
Both men had criminal records in France and were involved in drug running.
