Screen shot 2017-02-19 at 18.57.45Local Police, Guardia Civil and the Fire Service all turned up this afternoon, 19th February, in Calle Pablo Iglesias in Almuñécar following the report of a fire in an apartment block.

Police arrived first to find thick black smoke and flames coming from the building, with the seat of the small blaze appearing to be in the stairwell.

Although a couple of people were holding towels to their faces, it appears nobody was injured, and the Fire Service had the small fire, which was thought to be due to an electrical fault, under control and out withing a few minutes.

They remained at the scene for an hour or so, using a small generator to extract the smoke from the stairwell.

Calle Pablo Iglesias is on the right-hand-side as you come down Ave. Europa and just before you reach Parque Majuelo. You may know it for its rather good roast chicken establishment.

First reports came to the Gazette via local builder, Graham Linton, who was in the area attending to some business in Taberna Ayer. He explained that before the fire service arrived there were flames and thick black smoke coming from both the front and rear of the building and locals were worried because they thought it might be originating from the underground parking area.

Editorial comment: This is one of several fires in  the  Avenida Europa area in recent years, as covered by the Gazette, with blazes in a local hotel Carmen, an underground car park beneath Restaurante Lute y Jesus.
