Ecologistas en Acción in Motril has heavily criticised the provincial office of Costas over their handling of beach regeneration.
In fact, they have gone so far as to report the administration to the Tribunal de Cuentas; a government spending watchdog.
The ecologist movement consider that the tactic of repeatedly trucking in river sand to replace sand washed away by wave action, rather than building beach defences such as groynes and breakwaters on Playa Granada, is a complete and irresponsible waste of public money.
The ecologist movement has requested that those responsible for “knowingly” spending money in this “useless” fashion should “pay for it from their own pocket.”
They also say that in June 2016, just before the latest sand regeneration operation, they warned Costas that to do so on the said beach would only last until the next westerly gale. Now, as foreseen, by the ecologists at least, the sand has been washed away leaving a steep step in the beach.
The said controversial beach operation that encroached into the summer season, meaning that Playa Granada had to be closed to the public whilst heavy machinery was being used, has effectively been a waste of public funds and time, says the movement’s spokesperson.
Ecologista en Accion calculate that in recent years over 10,000,000 euros have been wasted in this fashion; funds that could have used to built beach defences.
Lastly, they consider that last summer’s work was done in benefit of one private entity – Hotel Robinson, who have been denounced previous by the said ecologist movement for allegedly cutting off a public right of way with its gardens and sports facilities.
