Motril is the only town on the coast of Granada that has medium industry; it has the oil-storage plant and it has the paper mill, Torraspapel. However, there is a lot of uncertainty about the future of the latter.
According to the news publication, El Confidencial, the investments group, CVC Capital Partners, which bought the factory in 1999 for 575m pesetas, has put it up for sale for 600m euros, causing understandable consternation amongst its workers.
Again, according to the before-mentioned publication, the investment company tried to sell Torraspapel in 2011 but the economic crisis made such an action impossible. What the company did do, however, was to start making cuts on the shop floor, etc., to make it more efficient: there have been 600 workers laid off and some of the 3,300 employees have suffered salary cuts.
Editorial comment: Motril has an excellent future before it and plans for expansion in the port are well underway, so it would be a pity to lose the paper factory after having weathered so far this seemingly interminable financial crisis.
