Film in English – A Monster Calls

screen-shot-2016-10-22-at-10-29-45The next offering at the Casa de la Cultura in Almuñécar is A Monster Calls, starring Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones, Toby Kebbell, Lewis MacDougall and Liam Neeson.

The story centres around 12-year-old Conor O’malley (Lewis MacDougall) who is struggling to deal with the terminal illness of his mother (Felicity Jones). Matters are made worse for the lad as he also suffers regular attacks by the school bully, Harry (James Melville).

Then Conor’s life is changed when he is visited by a monster (Liam Neeson) who helps him by telling him stories, which in time turn Conors unhappy life around. Neeson’s monster takes the form of a giant tree/man.

Interestingly, the story was originally the idea of Siobhan Dowd, who herself had terminal cancer and died before being able to write it. However, the idea was passed on to Patrick Ness, who wrote the book as intended by Dowd, as a children’s fantasy novel. Having said that, it is quite a dark tale and parents should exercise caution as some countries have given it a 13 certificate and others a PG (parental guidance).

The film will be shown on Tuesday 25th October at 18.00h in the main auditorium at the Casa de la Cultura.
