Motril Blade Runner

mot-generator-blades-onlSorry, but it has nothing to do with that classic film; it’s about the giant blades for the wind turbines that pass through Motril Port.

This year the amount of such blades that are exported through the port has risen by 23.7% compared to last year, and we are still only in October (time of writing).

In 2015 the port handled 530 blades, which require special handling for loading and escort vehicles to clear the way for the lorry hauling them. Before the direct autovia access to the Port was finished, getting them around the roundabouts required the services of Merlin the Magician.

This year, just to date, they have handled 656 blades, most of which are exported to the UK and Northern Europe.

Furthermore, these blades are the largest ones made; 62 metres long.

And the quantity of wind-turbine blades will rise if they reopen the factory in Ferreira, up in north of the province, whose output would join those made at Vestas Eólicae in Daimiel (Ciudad Real).

The fact is that there are not many ports that have the access to handle such long-transport loads.
