A 20-year-old woman is claiming 3,000 euros from the public health system in Murcia for an unnecessary appendicitis operation.
She had gone to urgencias complaining of stomach pains and was diagnosed with acute appendicitis. She immediately underwent an emergency operation to remove the problem: an appendectomy.
However, the surgeons found that the appendix was healthy; logically it was removed anyway. The real cause of the problem had simply been germs.
The woman considers that she was unnecessarily put at risk by having to undergo an operation.
Editorial comment: had it been the other way around, I could understand her complaint. Claiming damages seems odd for having something removed that could cause her problems in later life, on the other hand…
