A father and his son managed to carry out an arrest on a man who had stolen a briefcase from a judge’s car: read on.

Firstly, like father, like son: the father is a policeman seconded to an administrative, civilian job, and the son is studying to be a policeman like his father.

They had just met up in the centre of Málaga on Calle Pácifico after the son had left the municipal library after having studied all day for his entrance exams.

The father recognized a passerby as somebody who he had arrested on several occasions in the past; somebody who was known for stealing from parked cars. He pointed out the man to his son and commented, “if he’s around here, he’s up to something,”… and with that the father decided to follow him, with the son in tow.

It wasn’t long before, from a safe distance, they saw the man break a side window of a parked car and remove an object – this was just after three in the afternoon on the 28th of September.

The father then explained how they caught him between them, approaching from different directions, pretending to speak on their telephones so as not to spook him, and before the thief knew it, he was nabbed.

Moments later the owner of the car, who just happened to be a judge, had seen that his car had been broken into and that his briefcase containing sensitive information was missing, so he phoned 092, the emergency number for the Policía Nacional; a patrol car was dispatched.

When it arrived they asked the judge if it was him who had phoned and before the judge could go into a lengthy explanation, they assured him that his briefcase was safe and the thief was in custody.

So, the lad who was swatting for his entrance exam actually made an arrest even before becoming a policeman; something that he now has almost certainly achieved. The judge got his briefcase back and the father had the chance to show his son how it was done – everybody was happy except for the thief, that is…
