Bogus Gasmen Arrested

SPN False Gasmen OnLThe police have brought two men from Cájar before a magistrate for allegedly having swindled an elderly lady out of several hundred euros.

The suspects, aged 41 and 29 and both with criminal records, masqueraded as gas-installation inspectors in order to take 500 euros from an 88-year-old woman, according to the Guardia Civil.

The incident took place on the 9th of September at 14.30h. Whilst one of the men was trying to persuade the victim to part with money as payment up front for a change of water meter, his colleague was going through her house in search of valuables, when he came across 500 euros on a bedside table.

Just as he reappeared in the sitting room, the granddaughter arrived and the two men rapidly beat a retreat.

The family immediately reported the incident at the nearest Guardia Civil post (Pinos Puentes), where the police lost no time in tracking down the suspects and carrying out their arrest.

The men have been arrested for similar offences in Huelva, Badajoz, Granada and Jaen

It is precisely because criminals target the elderly with this sort of fraud that the Guardia Civil has been organising meetings with the elderly in villages and towns in the province, to warn them about what to expect and what to do if they find themselves in this situation.
