Almuñécar boasts several sections of the Roman aqueducts that brought water to the town in that era, and still do, but at least one section is showing cracks in its support columns.
The section in question, built in the 1st Century AD, is catalogued as Aqueduct Section III and is situated next to El Cercado de la Santa Cruz, measuring 72 metres in length and is supported by nine lower and upper arches.
This state of deterioration was brought to public notice by the opposition party, the PA, which, they claim, is the result of “a lack of maintenance and care.”
It appears that one of the main support columns for a major arch has an “alarming” crack through it, affecting the stone work and mortar.
“There have been several complaints made on the social networks, accompanied by photographs,” says the party spokesperson. Consequently, the PA is demanding that the relevant authorities; local provincial and regional, take urgent action.
