Two Motril Museums Closed

MOT Mining MuseumA broken aircon unit and a lack of staff are the reasons that the Town Hall has given for the temporary closure of two museums in Motril.

Fortunately, Motril has four museums, so the closure of the Museo de Historia (Mimo) and the Geomuseo (the mines below Cerro Toro) until September will not mean that culture vultures will have nowhere to perch.

The problem with the History Museum is that one of the aircon units has broken down, so the Councillor for Culture has taken the step to close its doors until September when it is cool enough for its one remaining aircon unit to cope with the task.

The Councillor, Francisco Ruiz, explained that the municipal culture budget was 70,000, of which only 1,400 remains – to repair the aircon unit it would cost 2,500… Sr. Ruiz wonders how the previous administration had managed to spend the vast majority of the budget by the end of May…

Which brings us onto the mine museum. The problem here is that there aren’t enough staff. Of the seven museum staff, three or four are on holiday, explained the councillor so something had to close – the most far-flung museum was chosen.

The Councillor complains that the previous administrations had increased the number of museums that Motril has, when they opened the Centro de Desarrollo Turístico, without hiring staff to man it.

The PP spokesperson; i.e., for the party that governed Motril before, said that the Councillor could have used the school janitors to cover the posts of those on holiday in order to keep the museums open and that she was not “convinced” by the the aircon unit ‘excuse.’
