You don’t have to wait until the 31st of December to celebrate New Year because on the 1st Saturday of every August, Bérchules in the Alpujarra holds its own one.
No, we haven’t gone bonkers – this tiny Alpujarra village has been holding its New Year celebrations, right down to the twelve grapes at midnight, at the height of summer since back in 1994.
This quirky tradition is more about stubborn determination rather than having a wonky village calendar; you see in 1994 there was a power cut right before midnight and the whole village was left fondling its grapes despondently…
So the village exclaimed, “What the hell!” and unanimously decided that they would not be cheated out of their New Year celebration, even if they had to hold them in August, which is precisely what they have have been doing for last 20 years.
So, there you have it, this Saturday you have an appointment in Bérchules for a very unique New Year’s party!
Here’s a map so that you will know where to find it!
