The local police in Linares, Jaén, got a shock when a man walked into their station with a hand grenade, saying that he had found it laying on a street.
The device, an R-41 Oramil, used during the 36-39 Spanish Civil War was in good condition… and live.
The municipal police lost no time in informing the Policia Nacional – one thing is handing out parking fines and another is juggling with hand grenades of dubious stability.
The Spanish Army bomb-disposal squad, TEDAX, strolled nonchalantly up, took possession of the hand grenade (no doubt pretending to drop it a couple of times) and took the aging device, with 125 grammes of TNT and a 4-second fuse, away for detonation.
Editorial comment: I don’t know; naval mines in Alicante, hand grenades in Jaen and farting cushions on Costa Tropical – what is Spain coming to?
