Missing Diver Found Dead

LHR Punta de la Mona OnLThe body of a young diver (free diver) who had gone missing off Cerro Gordo, has been recovered by Guardia Civil divers (GAES).

The 29-year-old victim, Almuñécar resident, had been out diving with his father and brother on the afternoon/evening of Wednesday the 28th.

The deceased was located and recovered around midday today, according to the Councillor for Citizen Safety, Juan José Ruiz Joya. The recovery took place between Calaisa and Playa de Cantarriján, i.e., right on the very point of the headland.

Update: The man’s age has now been established as 30. He was found at a depth of 20 metres, just 15 metres from the shore.

In the Spanish press he had been described as a buceador and then afterwards, as a submarinista; the first being a generic term and the second, in linguistic terms, a ‘false friend’ for submariner, which he was not.

A local diving club wanted it made clear that he was not a scuba diver, but a free diver; i.e., submerges on a lung-full of air without any breathing apparatus.

The funeral service was this afternoon, Friday the 29th at the main church with many in attendance.

I’m sorry about the original mistakes in this article, Folks; i.e., saying Punta de la Mona when it was quite obviously Cerro Gordo.

We’re extremely short handed and run on a shoe-string, so bear with us, please.
