OK… further update from local media: It appears the vessel was travelling from Mallorca to Valencia when a blaze broke out onboard. The fire quickly got out of control and over 150 passengers were evacuated from the ship via lifeboats and were later picked up by another nearby ship answering her distress call.

At least three people are reported as being injured and were taken to hospital via helicopter transfer. So far, there is only one person reported as ‘seriously’ injured.

Latest: The stricken ferry is called Sorrento. The Port Authority in Mallorca have tweeted ‘Due to the fire damage, The Sorrento may sink in the position that it finds itself’

So, it seems the fire damage is so significant that the ferry will sink where she is, which is thought to be around 27km off Mallorca.

The 150 passengers who abandoned ship in lifeboats and were picked up will be back in Palma de Mallorca in around three hours.
