Almuñécar’s Plaza de Madrid fountain was inaugurated, with a full line-out of politicians for the photos…
Politicians all over Andalucia, especially, are desperate to inaugurate public works before the 30th of March because after that date and until the municipal elections in May, it is forbidden by law to hold public inaugurations.
So, finished ready or not, the fisherman statue’s fountain – representative of a boat… but with the water on the inside, was inaugurated by the Mayor of Almuñécar.
She gave a speech explaining how wonderful it was, but failing to convince why it was ‘necessary.’ The design of the flagstones or square surface, if you prefer, is the same as the new design of Avenida de Andalucia.
The budget for the work on the square was 16,000 euros and was carried out by local company Construcciones El Rancho.
All the roads that have been closed to traffic for the last month or so are operative with a temporary layer of tarmac on them, ready to be ripped up again once Easter passes.
Editorial comment: When are Spanish politicians going to get it into their heads that 20th-century-style politics are dead. Kissing babies and cutting inauguration ribbons impresses nobody anymore. Election campaigns are won or lost on TV, the Internet and social media.
