The Motril Town Council proposes to alter the existing Municipal Urban Development Plan (PGOU) to allow the construction of 42 dwellings in an area originally assigned for only 13.
Neighbours of the old Fábrica del Pilar are concerned that the infrastructure is insufficient for the proposed 42 flats, quite apart from the fact that originally there were going to be 13 2-storey houses whilst the new arrangement will see 3-storey structures.
The Town Hall says that it wants to cater for demand by 220 families for government-subsidized housing (VPO’s)
The locals, on the other hand, say that this is just an operation to “look good” before the electorate and that the public entity, Emuvimo (public housing entity) was dissolved because of a lack of demand. In fact, it will only serve the interest, they claim, of a private property developer.
Another point is the loss of view for the Terrazas del Mirador del Pilar, which by its very name implies having a view. The Councillor for Urban Development assured local residents that those dwellings nearest the Mirador del Pilar will only have two storeys and those further away will have more.
For those of you who know Motril, the derelict factory in question that will be the site for the new housing is the one just across from Café Paris, on the way up to the hospital on the ring road.
