The Spokeswoman for the Almuñécar CA, Eva Gaitán, considers that the Junta’s plan to block new marinas discriminates against the Costa Tropical.
Not only does the CA call for the controversial plan to be withdrawn, but they also want a new one, drawn up using wide consensus, which should include Almuñécar’s four projects: the enlargement of the Marina del Este; the inland marina project for the Sandovala and two marina projects; one in Punta de San José/San Cristóbal and the other in Velilla.
The Sandovala Project envisages the mouth of Rio Seco being the entrance to an inland marina carved out of the vega between the Mercandona supermarket in San Cristóbal to the Avenida Costa del Sol.
This project caused not a little controversy when it was first announced some years ago because it would basically be filled with seawater (saltwater), although flushed out by fresh water from the nearby river. Obviously, the mouth of the river next to Hotel Almuñécar Playa would have to be deepened to create the waterway access.
As for the Velilla project, if our memory serves us correctly, Almuñécar had received permission back in the late 70’s to build it, but nobody came forward and after 20 years or so the permission expired. The reason that nobody came forward was because the approved project did not include permission to build lots of housing to go with it – which is where the money is made.
