Part of the staff at the Motril Fire Station have rebelled against the station chief for alleged “bad management” and “mistreatment of staff.”
A group of firemen had gathered outside the Town Hall to publicly express their discontent with the boss – inside the building the Town Council was in a Plenary Meeting, so it didn’t go unnoticed.
The firemen, backed by an independent workers union for the sector, demanded better management of the fire station and an end to the “constant disdain towards the firemen,” which manifests itself in a series of “unjustified disciplinary reports.”
They also expressed their grievances over a 20% cut in manpower in recent years, a lack of training courses, (except for the boss himself), and a deterioration of maintenance standards.
Another complaint is over the use, or lack of it, of a special container (room) for fire-fighting techniques – the facility was bought over two years ago and hardly any of the firemen have had the chance to practice in it, claims the firemen’s union.
The Councillor for Citizen Safety, Manuel Ballesteros, under whom the fire service comes, considers that the complaints are unfair and that they are not based on reality or at best are “half accurate.”
