A Stairway to Heaven?

LHR New Steps OnLNot quite, but a withering flight of steps, at the very least!

The First Councillor of La Herradura, Juan José Ruiz, can be seen heroically walking down the new steps that link Calle Las Maravillas Norte to El Camino Real.

Local builders, Vaquero, carried out the work with a budget of 12,000 euros – strange figure,  you might think, but it is of course a big, round, two million pesetas. Before I move onto the dreaded “Peseta Mention,” it’s a safe bet that the builders don’t realize the negative implications behind the English translation of their name…

The Peseta Mention: Dave hates it when I mention that people are still working in pesetas (because I am always doing it) when they give quotes and set prices generally, but what is the point of being Editor if you don’t have writers that annoy you? Well, that’s my 4-pesetas worth (tuppence).

Anyway, this 17-metre flight of stone steps, ascending the equivalent vertical height of 10 metres, has a width of 1.5m, just wide enough for a dwarf like myself to lie across and rest half way up – thoughtful of them!
