A Wall That Nobody Wants

ECO Carchuna beach OnLTake a drive along the Carchuna beach and see if you can find somewhere to park – you will be disappointed.

The fact is that the several kilometres of almost continuous wall that separates the beach from the road, effectively making the beach inaccessible. So why is it there?

The answer to that one is the intransigence of Costas on the one hand and parked cars blocking the traffic flow, on the other.

Costas could have quite easily ceded three metres of beach all along the road side for parking and the same wall built that distance in, providing plenty of parking, but Costas is not known for being understanding.

Costas preferred to spend almost a million euros three years ago building the wall along the roadside… right where everybody used to park. The original idea was to create parking areas dotted along the way, but they never materialized, so Carchuna is stuck with the Junta’s version of the Great Wall of China.

As a sort of make-do summer solution, the Councillor for Beaches, has permitted cars to park up against the wall, obliterating the narrow footpath running between the road and the wall. This means that pedestrians have to walk along the beach side of the wall, on the sand.

What the First Councillor of Carchuna-Calahonda is worried about, however, is that the new section of autovía, which comes out next to the gasoline station on the N-340, will cause the main road to be congested and many drivers will nip down to the beach road escape from the jams… a recipe for disaster for the said beach raod.

Negotiations, however, are going on between Carchuna and the provincial office of Costas, which envisage the compulsory purchase of land above the road (where the greenhouses are) to create parking areas – four in total.

We shall see…
