The interminable roadworks going on along the N-340 between Almuñécar and Salobreña has reached a decisive point with a new lane having been laid and traffic diverted onto it.
The road surface between Urbanización Alfamar and Barranco Safio, near Hotel Salobreña, has long been a bumpy ride with the whole road threatening to slide down into the sea; hence the work to stabilize the hillside.
The previous efforts to provide a temporary fix had left the road surface very uneven and cracked, causing traffic to reduce speed to a crawl, especially heavy-goods vehicles with delicate loads.
For over a year work has been going on alongside, driving piles into the hillside before laying a completely new, parallel, 2-lane road surface. This ’emergency’ roadwork has a budget of 18.6m euros.
What is not clear is whether this will be a permanent new route for the N-340, or a temporary one until the original surface can be completely overhauled.
