Rocket Rules

Just about every country in the world has a few laws that are rarely, sometimes never, enforced. This is usually because the law is either archaic or just covers something that is extremely unlikely to happen.

Now let’s step over to Barcaldine, just east of Longreach in Queensland, Australia, where two police officers were happily keeping an eye on traffic, when suddenly a skateboard goes speeding past with a grinning youth onboard. Not only that, the youth had attached a rocket to the rear of the board, obviously to give him some extra umph!

Inspector Michael Fawcett explained that at first the officers were concerned as the rider was not wearing a helmet and he was unlit on a main road during the hours of darkness… however, the unlit part soon became irrelevant as the officers noticed the lad ignite something on the rear of his skateboard.”When they actually caught up with him, he’d actually duct taped a small rocket to the board to propel himself down the road. I was a commercially available item and according to the officers at the scene, they didn’t notice that it made a whole heap of difference to the performance.”

Well, it may not have made much difference to the speed of the skateboard, but there is a law in Australia that forbids the use of a ‘rocket propelled vehicle’ on a public road. The officers promptly wrote out a ticket for exactly that offense and handed it over.
“I suspect that this might be the only ever ticket issued for that particular offence in Queensland,” Inspector Fawcett concluded.
