Salobreña Rejects Provincial Council Plan

In the last Plenary meeting of the Salobreña Town Council a proposal made by the Provincial Council concerning rubbish disposal was unanimously rejected.

The reason why it was rejected was that in the opinion of the Town Council the same service would be charged for twice; i.e., Salobreña already charges its citizens for this service without adding another rubbish collection tax.

Furthermore, all parties in the Town Council consider that the Provincial Council’s proposal is an interference in their municipal autonomy, as according to the Law, how a town organizes its rubbish disposal is its own responsibility.

Another reason for the refusal was that the Provincial Council wanted to base the system on the value of the property, irrespective of how much rubbish that property produces, whereas Salobreña uses a system based on usage, much like water and electricity consumption.

Probably the biggest sticking point was that under the proposed system, it would cost Salobreña 300,000 euros a year, whereas under the existing system it only costs 185,000 euros.

Lastly, the Mayor announced that after closing the 2012 municipal accounts figures gave a surplus of 4,500,000 euros, which is the first time in ten years that the town hasn’t ended up in the red. The Mayor puts this down to his policy of not spending more than you earn.
