Almuñécar Old Town Rebels

The residents of Barrio del Castillo, Almuñécar, via its residents committee, considers that the Town Hall has not only neglected the old town, but that it also ‘mistreats’ its representatives.

In a list of demands, which include the reopening of Calle Nueva and Calle Clavelicos, closed because of the dangerous state of certain houses, the residents committee lists eight different points.

For example, the work on the castle ditch was halted and remains in a state of abandonment, adorned with rubbish and litter. Other points include the state of the following streets: Cobertizo, Cuesta del Carmen, Torremolinos, San Miguel Bajo, Orovia, Escamado and San Joaquín; some of which have abandoned houses that need attention or missing hand rails.

The committee also wants an increase in the cleaning and rubbish collection services, as present the coverage is inadequate to maintain the cleanliness of the barrio.

Another demand is that the San Miguel square (esplanada) be restored to pedestrian use instead of an area for parking cars, and for the street lighting to be fixed, as well as the benches returned to their original location – they have been removed.

To manifest these demands a protest was held in front of the castle gate with the ex-mayor, Juan Carlos Benavides in attendance.
