As part of the renovation work on Almuñécar’s Plaza Kelibia, the palm trees that graced the square have been cut down, rather than removed for replanting. This action has been criticised by the chief opposition party, the CA.
According to the CA, some of the trees were over 10m in height and were very representative of the town’s image. The CA goes on to claim that this is just another “attack against the environment and attrition of the town’s green areas,” citing the previous tree removal in Calle Hurtado de Mendoza.
Whereas on previous occasions when palm trees have been removed, they have been replanted elsewhere, whereas other types of trees, such as ficus, have been simply eradicated owing to the damage that their root system causes. However, it is evident from the photo that these palm trees have simply been cut down. It is possible that they were infected or sick, but as yet the Town Hall has not responded to these accusations.
