The left-wing party, IU, has had its complaint accepted by a judge concerning a ‘massive identification’ process, carried out by the authorities during the protests outside the Lower House of Parliament.
The complaint which was lodged by two IU MP’s is aimed specifically against the Governmental Delegate, Cristina Cifuentes, who the day after the demonstration on the 25th of September announced that the police had identified over 300 demonstrators, many of whom had already been notified that they had been fined up to 500 euros.
Although it is an inalienable right of Spanish Citizens to demonstrate in public places, it is a punishable offence to cause an obstruction to the parliamentary process. And that is how the Government interpreted the demonstration outside the Parliament, where a parliamentary process was in session at the time.
This interpretation of the law by the Government is highly questionable, as was the reaction of the riot police and the identifying process, en masse, of those that took part, resulting in fines being levied.
