Tunnel Accident Exercise

Volunteers from the Protección Civil de Nerja staged an emergency exercise to approve their rapid response to a hypothetical car accident inside a motorway tunnel.

The place chosen was kilometre point 288 on the A-7, on the eastbound side, inside a tunnel between Torrox and Nerja.

The ‘accident’ was a multiple vehicle affair, involving three cars, (producing a fire) and eight injured (played by P.C. volunteers).

Response time from the first call was ten minutes from Nerja and 18 from Vélez Málaga. Apart from giving medical attention to the injured and putting out the burning vehicle, the fire service had to enact cutting out trapped passengers.

The Provincial Consortium of Fire Service from Málaga sent seven fire vehicles and 18 crew. Also involved were the Nerja municipal police, the Guardia Civil, representatives from the Ministerio de Fomento and the Spanish Red Cross, as well as representatives of the Almuñécar fire service and their Protección Civil volunteers.
