The Mayor of Salobreña, Gonzalo Fernández Pulido, had some harsh words for the ex-Mayor of Motril Carlos Rojas; Sr Rojas, who is now a regional MP, had appeared in Salobreña to criticise the IBI increase.
Sr Fernández expressed ‘surprise’ to hear Sr Rojas comments and commented, “I supposed he came here to explain the enormous debt that the PP left behind in Salobreña (17-million euros) or why the Central Government [also PP] has forced town halls to pay off their debts under threat of an embargo and a takeover of municipal accounts.”
Accompanying the Mayor during this press conference was the socialist MP, Javier Aragón, who underlined the ‘hypocrisy’ behind the ex-Motril Mayor’s comments over the rise in IBI (property tax) in Salobreña, when his own party is slashing funding for education, health, as well as eliminating workers’ rights.
The socialist MP went on to comment that what really was ‘strangling’ citizens was the rise in IVA, partial-payment on drug prescriptions and the rise in electricity prices, all of which are approved, each Friday, by the PP Board of Ministers in Madrid.
The MP pointed out that Sr Rojas had voted in the Regional Parliament against a request for an Employment Plan put before the Central Government, yet only 48 hours later to appear in Salobreña and demand that the Mayor creates more employment in the town.
Finally, the Mayor of Salobreña questioned how Sr. Rojas “had the gall” to complain about the proposed rise in the Salobreña property tax (a total of 50%) when two years previously, when the then PP Mayor of Salobreña raised the property tax by 90% and Sr. Rojas had made no comment.
