Calls for Town Hall Intervention

Eighteen workers from the combined staff of the Acuario de Fauna Mediterránea and the Parque Ornitológico Loro Sexi; both in Almuñécar, demonstrated in front of the Town Hall, calling for the Mayor to take action.

Previous demonstrations have been aimed at Sr. Xavier Aliart, whose company runs the two premises, and who is responsible for the 5-months outstanding in salaries, but this time it is to demand that an Extraordinary Plenary Meeting of the Council be called to do something, “once and for all,” as both premises are publicly owned. What the workers are calling for is for the Town Council to take over the running of the aquarium and bird park, explained the manager of the aquarium, Sr. Oscar Jimenez.

The situation is not sustainable, he points out, because the only reason that the workers are turning up for work is to keep the marine life alive, “something that seems important to only us,” he lamented.

Apparently, the workers have approached the Mayor on numerous occasions, as well as representatives of other political parties, to get the Town Council involved: “They just keep putting us off, but we can’t go on like this, because besides the families of the 18 workers, the health and upkeep of the marine life and birds in both establishments,” he pointed out.

The workers are disappointed that nobody appears to be reacting, despite, they claim, that several companies are interested in taking on the concession.

“We know that Xavier Aliart is totally ignoring our plight, but what surprises us is that the Town Hall is dragging this situation out, instead of taking action, because the situation is really urgent,” said Sr Jiménez.
