The Junta de Andalucia now knows how much it will cost to demolish the controversial, macro-hotel, Hotel Azata, which was built on protected land on Playa Algarrobico near Carboneras, Almería – seven million euros! The Minister for the Environment for the Central Government in Madrid agrees with this figure, after making its own calculations.
At the beginning of July, the Junta asked the demolition company Tragsa to come up with an estimate, to not only demolish the monstrosity but also to deal with the rubble and other residues left. The estimate also includes restoring the area to its original state.
The Minister, Arias Cañete, said that the Algarrobico case is a clear example of what illegal constructions can expect in future and that this action goes to show how effective the new Ley de Costas will be. The Seaside Gazette will cover this new law in a separate article.
The Green Peace representative for coastal issues, Pilar Marcos, applauded the fact that the Minister ‘knew how much the demolition was going to cost,’ but added that what was needed now was action; i.e., the demolition to start.
