Marina Drug Bust

The criminal court in Motril has sentenced a man from Prat de Llobregat (Barcelona) to three years’ imprisonment, as well as a fine of three million euros after it was found that he had just over two metric tonnes of hasish onboard his yacht at a berth in Marina del Este.

Mind you, this didn’t happen ‘yesterday,’ as J.M.G.H. set course for a sticky end on the 17th of December 2004 when he purchased a yacht to carry out drug runs. On the 11th of January the following year, he set sail for an undisclosed destination, only to return to the marina,  just hours later, where he tied up.

The Guardia Civil just happened to notice that the craft was pretty low in the water, which meant that it was sinking or had a hefty cargo on board. Judging it to be the latter, they acquired a court order to search the boat and were soon rewarded with the discovery of 70 packages of hashish with a total weight of 2,092 kilos.

Should J.M.G.H. have any loose change left after paying the 3m fine, he will also have to pay the court costs. The sentence is final and no appeal is permitted.
