The Nerja Town Hall is carrying out its blitz on terrace seating for bars and restaurants. The campaign to put some sort of order into the situation began in July and so far the Servicios Operativos Municipales have removed 23 tables and 72 chairs from one particular business in town.
The Town Hall has been targeting both unauthorized bar terraces or ones that occupy more space than permitted in their licence. The Town Hall claims that this measure is being taken after receiving numerous complaints from members of the public.
The ‘confiscated’ material has been placed in municipal storage facilities. To get them back, the proprietors have to cough up the corresponding fines, as well as any other outstanding debts with the Town Hall.
The department for the Ocupación de la Vía Pública recognises that businesses have to occupy public space but not to the detriment of the general public; i.e., tables and chairs that block or made difficult the right of way of pedestrians.
