Music School Survives

The Motril Town Hall and the teaching staff at the Municipal Music School have reached an accord that will keep the school running, after all indicated that it would be closed down due to a lack of funding.

Councillor Elena Vallejo expressed her gratitude for the good disposition of the teaching staff, and her personal satisfaction at having reached an agreement after intense negotiations. The result, she considers, is positive for all concerned.

Basically, what the Town Hall originally wanted was for the teachers to form a cooperative to run the school, which was rejected by them and a counter solution offered, which was finally accepted by the Town Hall: teachers will reduce their class hours down from 37 per week to 25, whilst at the same time the municipal financial injection will be reduced by 50% compared to previous years.

“It’s great news,” said the councillor, “as, this way, the nine teaching posts can be retained – nobody loses their job, and students can continue to access quality music classes as before.”

The Dance and Guitar teachers, Alba Cruz and Sergio Torres, have also offered their sincere thanks to the Town Hall for its efforts to reach an agreement and its determination to keep the project running, as it has done for the last 13 years. The teachers say that they have had to adapt themselves to these difficult times. They also thanked the citizens of Motril and the parents association on behalf of the municipal music school, for the support given at all times.
